Tolkien Studies

The Wikipedia Wars

A lot of people don't like Wikipedia because it is so easy to change the content there. How do you know that what you read at Wikipedia is correct? Many former contributors also complain that Wikipedia's admins don't know how to handle disputes between experts. Some news stories have told about famous people trying to correct errors in their profiles, only to see the errors restored by Wikipedia editors.

Larry Sanger, who helped start Wikipedia, now wants to do it over the right way. He is launching a new site called Citizendium that he hopes won't be embarrassed by all the amatuerish content that has ruined Wikipedia. If you think Wikipedia is a good starting point for your Tolkien research, just think about about how many Tolkien experts are now helping out with it: none.

Tolkien Studies

There are a lot of places on the Internet where you can study the books by J.R.R. Tolkien with helpful tips and essays. A lot of people like Michael Martinez's essays at Suite101 and MERP. He also started the Tolkien Studies website that inspired this one. You can find neat sites there to help you learn more about Tolkien. Check out the Tolkien Essays page in the link below for some great essay sites but here are a few places to help you study Tolkien.

  1. The Tolkien Society Forodrim
This is the website of the Scandinavian Tolkien Society but part of it has been done in English. They have great essays that lay out the chronology of Tolkien's books and essays.
  2. The Elvish Linguistic Fellowship
One of the oldest Tolkien linguistic groups these guys publish original Tolkien material from time to time in their Vinyar Tengwar journal.
  3. What Tolkien Really Did With The Sampo
Text of a lecture by Professor Jonathan Himes about how Tolkien was influenced by the Kalevala. It would be nice if these guys would write about the Bible and other early literature that influenced Tolkien.
  4. Resources for Scholars by the Tolkien Society
Kind of a silly list but it's the Tolkien Society so they should be mentioned.
  5. Studies on the Works of Tolkien
This is a Finnish site but it seems to be in English too.
  6. Tolkien Articles and Links
This directory was the first serious attempt to document all the great research sites on the Web.
